The Highland Terrace after-school tutor program celebrates another fine year of bringing older students together with Highland Terrace students to improve academic skills. Thank you to Ms. Swanson and all of the fine adults and students who made this year's program such a success. |

Spring, 2005 - Members of the Highland Terrace Chess Club have been facing off with one another for much of the year. Students have learned the art of chess from the adults who have led the class. The chess club will continue next year. Sign-up forms will be available in your Tuesday bulletin. |

March, 2005- Highland Terrace students in grades K-6 use new, wireless iBook laptops as a learning tool to support classroom lessons. Students in 5th grade recently worked with Ms. Higgins and Mr. Stegner on a math lesson involving graphing and spreadsheets. |

February, 2005- At a SING for K-3 students, Mrs. Smith uses "Slow Down Snail" to teach Ms. Wegg's "Impulsive Puppy" about controlling impulses. All Highland Terrace students learn about controlling impulses, developing empathy, and controlling anger through the Second Step curriculum. |

February, 2005- Our winter has been so warm that kids have been shedding coats on the playground! Our recess teachers thought that this was a perfect photo opportunity. Thanks for keeping those coats off of the ground kids! |

January, 2005- Mrs. Buren uses an iBook and a projector to wirelessly access an interactive website that teaches second grade students about the salmon lifecycle. The 2004-2005 school year has brought technology into the classroom as a daily part of student learning. |

January, 2005- Fifth graders use atlases in the Reference Room to research landforms. Students performed research using three separate resources, conducted science experiments related to landforms, and used digital photography to document the results. |

December, 2004- Several Highland Terrace students participated in the 2004 Seattle Marathon. Way to go kids! Ask Mrs. Nygard about how you can get involved in next year's marathon. |

December, 2004- Sarah Bayle, our teacher in Room 4's Blended Program, worked with her students and Ms. McCary-Smith's students on a using sign language to share a song for Friday Sing. |

November, 2004- Highland Terrace students each spent one hour with guest artist/illustrator Nina Laden. Through Nina's stories and activities, students learned how to create lively story characters. The Highland Terrace community extends a hearty thank you to Nina and our PTA for providing students with such a terrific experience. |

October, 2004- At each Friday Sing, selected primary students receive an Orca Pride award as recognition of their academic and social achievements. Give yourself a pat on the back Orcas! |

October, 2004- Q13 Television Reporter, Stella Thurkill, met with the Kidnews crew to discuss the finer points of being a television reporter. Students learned about proper presentation technique as well as the intricate teamwork that supports a television broadcast. |

September, 2004 - As part of their Washington State studies, fourth graders visited the corn maze and had a foggy taste of life on the farm. The corn maze is in the shape of Washington State. |
