Spelling Words 10/18/04

portraying, fundraising, misunderstanding, responsibility.
*Each student will have an additional five personal words as well.
Spelling Procedures
Preview: (first day of the week)
--Students take out a blank sheet of paper and number it from 1 to 15.
--Teacher reads a word, uses the word in a sentence, and then repeats the word. Students are not to begin writing until after the word has been repeated.
--Read the 5 pattern words and then the five vocabulary words
--Students take out a correcting pen.
--Teacher reads the words, spells the words, and then writes the word on the board. It stays on the board all week long for reference.
--Students correct their papers
--Have student pass out index cards
--Student write all 10 words correctly on the index cards
--Students then look through their writing to find 10 personal words.
--To find the correct spelling, students may use a dictionary. (It is up to the student top verify that personal words are spelled correctly)
--After completing their cards with all 15 words, Students bring the card up to the teacher. --The student then tapes the card to his or her desk.
--If the student does not have 5 personal wordsrarely happensTeacher can assign additional words to the student.
***If the student wants a real challenge, encourage them to go out of their comfort area when writing.
Sentences: (second day of the week)
--The Sentences look identical to the Review (Test) with the exception of using their index card.
--Students write their spelling word and then write a sentence containing each of their spelling words.
--The word must be spelled correctly in both places.
--Students must underline their spelling word in their sentence.
--Students must use the word correctly in the sentence.
--Students are responsible for making sure they wrote down the word correctly. They can always refer to the board.
--If the word is used in a sentence incorrectly, the student must look the word up in the --Dictionary and write an appropriate sentence for the word.
--Students keep their spelling sentences throughout the weekif they loose their index card, they dont have to look for their personal words again.
Review
ERASE THE SPELLING WORDS FROM THE BOARD!
--Teacher announces that we will be taking a review. Students exchange index cards with a partner and turn the index cards over.
--Students clear their desks except for a pencil and paper.
--Students number their papers up to 15
--Read the spelling words to the studentsDO NOT USE THEM IN A SENTENCE!
--Students only write down the spelling word.
--After teacher reads the last of the class words, the students write their words in a sentence and underline their spelling word.
--Students then give each other their personal words
--Students write sentences just as before.
--When completed, students turn into the spelling folder.
