Brookside Emergency Plan:
A Brookside Emergency Plan is ready for use in the case of more likely emergencies (wind storm, electrical outage, snow, intruders). A more extensive plan is being developed to handle large emergencies (earthquake, etc). Brookside faculty and staff have been organized into emergency teams which could mobilize if needed. Emergency supplies (water, food, and first aid supplies) are stored on campus. The Emergency committee has created an "Emergency backpack" for each classroom that contains "comfort items" for students and basic first aid supplies.
An essential element in the Brookside plan is (of course) student safety. All Brookside families are required to fill out a Student Emergency Plan which is kept on file in the office.
Emergency early dismissal:
Students are at school already, but need to
be dismissed due to snow, power outages, wind):
Brookside may dismiss students
up to two hours early, with buses running on regular or emergency
routes. The school will consult the
Student Emergency
Plan in order to determine where your child
should go when the emergency occurs (home on the bus, to the
neighbor's, etc), and/or to whom your child may be released (with a
classmate, grandparent, etc).
If your Plan specifies that
your child should take the bus, he/she will be dismissed to the buses
and dropped off at the earlier time. Listen to
the radio or consult the Public
Service Announcement bulletin for early
dismissal times.
Your child should know what to do if he/she is sent home early. If they take the bus, do they then report to a neighbor? Do they go home with a friend on a different bus? Should they wait at school for a relative to pick them up? Plan ahead to avoid confusion during an emergency. If you haven't planned ahead and this is an emergency, rest assured your child will not be released until safe plans are secure. If you are desperate, Brookside's office number is 206-368-4140. Expect delays.
Late Start:
Students are at home, and school is up to
two hours late. If there
has been snow, wind, and/or potential loss of power, listen to the
radio or TV or consult the Public
Service Announcement bulletin for start
times. Buses will run on
normal or emergency routes with the specified
delay, or you can drop your students off at
the late start time. Please do not drop your students off at school
at the regular start time if a delay is reported; teachers also need
extra time to get to work, and are not prepared for students who
arrive early.
Preparing a Family/Home
Emergency Plan
Mr. Carl Larson from the Shoreline Fire Department, led the Brookside faculty and staff in developing an Emergency plan (August 1996). He stresses that no individual will be able to operate effectively in the event of an emergency unless that individual knows his/her family is safe. It is ESSENTIAL that all families develop their own contingency plan in the event of a disaster.
