Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Interesting Facts:

When Jackie Joyner was nine, she and her sisters carried sand from a local park to their yard--one potato-chip bagful at a time--to make a long-jump pit.

In high school Joyner was successful in many sports, including basketball, volleyball, and track. She went to UCLA on a basketball scholarship; there she met her coach and future husband, Bob Kersee.

The heptathlon includes the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run. It was first introduced to the Olympics in 1984, when Joyner won a silver medal.
