According to some stories, John Henry supposedly could shake down mountains.

In one story, Henry was sick, so his wife took his hammer and swung it just as he did.

John Henry became a folk hero to railroad workers and construction gangs.

As in Henry's time (the 1870s), many tunnels today are made by a process of drilling and then blasting with explosives. Modern methods make it possible to advance about forty to sixty feet per day.
