Interesting Facts:The Philippines has approximately 7,100 islands. More than half are so tiny they don't have names. About 900 of the islands are inhabited by humans. The Philippines has been controlled by Spain (late 1500's-1898), the United States (1898-1935), and Japan (1942-44). Before its independence in 1946, it was a self-governed commonwealth of the United States. The Philippines was named after King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s. Approximately fifty species of bats are native to the Philippines. Other species found there include crocodiles and monkeys. |
