Home Education Exchange Coordinator
Laura Brown was hired to teach in the Shoreline School District in 2005, after 9 years of homeschooling her son. Her career in education previous to that began at Sylvan Learning Centers and Laurelhurst AfterSchool Enrichment Rooms (LASER). She served her teaching internship at Laurelhurst Elementary in Seattle, and spent one year at a private elementary school before deciding that it was not the right time to pursue a Masters’ degree in education, which in 1990 was the effective end to a career in education.
10 years spent bookkeeping and running local business offices paid for homeschooling her one son, Gordon. It was clear that he was not cut out for a regular classroom early on, but Laura has been interested in homeschooling since her last year of high school, back in 1981. In consequence, Gordon has been homeschooled since pre-school.
Laura was a member of the Shoreline Homeschool Association for part of that time, both offering and accepting advice with other homeschoolers. For the past 8 years, she has been part of Home Education Exchange. 5 of those years she was a parent-partner, but enjoyed helping other parents with curriculum considerations, based on her experiences. Two more years teaching a variety of classes at HEE included math, public speaking skills, and “psychology for kids.” She now specializes in math, and is working towards an endorsement in middle and high school mathematics.
Laura, her husband Tim, and Gordon have lived in Shoreline since 1989, and Laura is a life-long resident of the Seattle area.
