Students learn how to write in hiraganna, speak simple phrases, and be able to introduce themselves. The class is held twice a week and homework is required. Students must commit to the full year. |

Art |
Tessera is a process-oriented art space. Participants explore and develop individual interests and actively participate in group and community projects. Participants will explore art through action including ceramics, painting, drawing, printing, papermaking, papier maché, etc. in a process-oriented studio. with Hart |
Sue Hart teaches drawing techniques with a variety of mediums. Younger students will be introduced to drawing and painting, capturing a likeness of the subject as well as learning about different types of art and ways of thinking and “seeing” and older students will learn to draw subjects including the human face and form, animals, landscapes, and still life. Olympiad |
Students learn science in fun well organized hands-on approach. Teams prepare ahead, through study and workshops, for competition in a variety of science disciplines. The competition is low-key and focuses on solving science problems through cooperative teamwork. Student will be expected to do the homework, prepare for the competitions and possibly compete all the way to the State level. Travel, extra meetings and preparations may be involved. |

Technology |
First trimester students participate in the First Lego League’s 2005 Ocean Odyssey Challenge. Second and third trimester students will use LEGO construction elements and other technologies to explore scientific concepts including simple machines, compound machines, and robotics. |

Beginner LEGO® |
Students use LEGO construction kits to learn basic construction techniques. Students will be required to build the models following the kit instructions. After completing each configuration in the kit instructions the students will design and build their own freestyle configuration. Parent help required. |

PUF Math |
Hands-on,
concept-driven math activities. Students will discover how numbers
work in an orderly way, and how they can figure out math problems
rather than simply memorizing facts or formulas. Addition and subtraction,
as well as place value, even multiplication, fraction and division
concepts are covered. A variety of curricula & manipulatives
are used. Miquon, Cuisenaire rods, counting objects/toys, number
lines, Math-U-See blocks, place value rods, and more are part of
the fun! |

T.B.M |
TBM is
individualized tutoring, using either my materials or your own. HEE
has complete sets of Saxon, Singapore Math, “Key to... (Math)” and
Math-U-See, as well as many other resources. Students in TBM might
be struggling in math, or they might just need some enrichment to
keep them interested. Using a combination of “regular math” materials,
as well as some fun materials, children make good progress in learning
concepts, catching up, or getting ahead in math! |

Mapping the |
Geography: An innovative approach to learning geography Students will be able to identify bodies of land and water, countries, and physical features throughout the world, and more. Outside study and homework is required...but fun! |

Writer's
Workshop |
This class
meets at lunchtime. Students eat their lunch while listening to
other students share their writings. The student will develop skills
in writing and listening. Students will also have the opportunity
to be published in an Anthology. Homework includes preparation of
a piece to read in class. |

Beginning Writing
Using Six Traits |
Students will learn, understand, and apply the six traits of effective writing: Idea, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice and Conventions. They will learn a clear process and common language for discussing and evaluating writing. As students are immersed in various forms of writing, such as recount, procedure, report, expository, narrative, and poetry they will be empowered to recognize the elements of good writing and incorporate these into their own pieces. An emphasis will be placed on writing single paragraphs and five paragraph essays. Homework will be optional. Students must begin fall trimester and commit to remaining in class for the year. |

Students

and evaluating writing. This advanced class will focus specifically
on applying all the traits to a biography an extensive narrative
piece, expository essays, persuasive essays and a poetry unit. Students
will also select an inquiry project for the year, which will require
an end of the year formal presentation using report writing skills.
Weekly homework will be assigned. Students will receive a grade.
Students must begin fall trimester and commit to remaining in class
for the year. |

Shurley Grammar |
Students
learn and apply Grammar exercises from the Shurley Grammar book at
home and once a week in a group setting, emphasizing participatory,
auditory reinforced, fun, and self-esteem building. |

|
Literature Celebrations |
Does your
child love to read? Or is she a reluctant reader? This class will
provide an opportunity for your young adult to read and discuss a
variety of Literature with his peers. Together we will read Newberry’s,
classics, Shakespeare, biographies, poetry, memoirs, historical fiction
(World War ll and Civil Rights), mysteries, fantasy, realistic fiction
and science fiction. “Celebrations” (Projects and responses
to the reading.) of novels will occur both in groups and individually.
Vocabulary development will be emphasized. Each student will be given
an opportunity to recite a classic poem. Our overall emphasis will
be a love of Literature, which we will share with each other! Approximately
2-4 hours of homework a week will be assigned. This class is available
for High School NARHs credit. |

Whole
Language Experience |
Students
gather to share the wonderful world of words. They read stories and
poems, explore words and their meanings. A fun, participatory class
where the love of language is celebrated. |

Basic
drama instruction, games, improvisation story enactment, performance
application. Performance at the Expos required. Fun oriented. |

Drama Production
and Skills |
Drama instruction with performance orientation. More serious perspective. Games, improvisation, skill building. Performance at the Expos required. Class attendance required once plays are assigned, unless teacher is contacted ahead. Homework includes memorization of lines and practice of skills. |

Juggling |
"Catch" the action at this beginning juggling class for students in grades K-8. Participants will learn with scarves, bags, rings, and clubs. Students will learn how to juggle using a step-by-step approach. |

Open Gym |
The gym will be open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday. Parents must supervise their children in the gym. |
|
|
Participate in fun physical activities in a positive atmosphere. Gain skills in golf, badminton, hockey and many team sports. Special emphasis placed on historical and common recess games. |
|
|
|
Students participate in cooperative games aimed at building physical strength and coordination, exercise, teamwork skills, rules and strategies for sports and games. |
|
|
Students
explore videography as a communication tool. They will learn to use
video cameras, computer editing software, lighting and sound equipment
while applying these tools to tell stories and communicate information. |
|
|
|
Independent video projects and advanced video production techniques including Final Cut Pro, DVD Pro and special effects. Instruction times and equipment use are arranged on an as-needed basis. |

|
|
Sewing Workshops |
Participants learn beginning and intermediate sewing skills. Primarily quilting, embroidery, pillows, simple clothing and other basic sewing projects. Students will do hand and machine sewing. |

Short Term
Seminars and Workshops |
During the year the Home Education Exchange sponsors a variety of short term, focused seminars and workshops. The classes are designed to offer specific learning opportunities from two to six sessions. Topics will vary from “just-for-fun” activities to specific academic objectives. |

Accelerated Reader is an excellent educational tool. It is based on research and widely accepted educational theory. The concept is simple, the more children read the better they read. This program tracks the students' reading and maintains accurate records of their practice. |

Weekly
Contests |
The participants enter contests in various subject areas. Entering a contest offers several benefits. It helps students understand and follow directions, students are also motivated to put more effort in their final product, and the recognition when they win builds self-confidence. |

Swimming |
Students meet at a local pool for lessons and free swim. |
|
|
Gymnastics |
Students meet Cascade Olympics Gym for weekly lessons. |
