Q: I've heard you will be moving; when and where?

A:The District Advisory Committee for Programs and Operations has recommended to the School Board that our program be relocated to another existing site. It is only a recommendation and the School Board will consider the merits and make a decision in April 2007. Regardless, the district supports the Home Education Exchange and its members.

Q: How do I enroll?

A:The most direct way to join the Home Education Exchange is to come down to HEE at North City, 816 N.E. 190th, Shoreline, Washington 98155 (Location on Map) and fill out an enrollment form. You may also call us and request a mailing (206) 418-3388. As well, an interest application is available on-line. At this time we are taking names for our current waiting list..

You must complete the following forms:

  • Shoreline School District Registration
  • Certificate of Immunization Status
  • Authorization for Release of School Records
  • Interdistrict Release (if the student resides out of district)
  • Letter of Understanding

Q: What kind of support do you offer home school families?

The most complete answer can be found in the Program Description and Member Handbook, available online and by request, and at our WINGS Database site.

A: Basically, we provide home educated students in grades K-12 the means to access Shoreline School District resources under the direction of their parents and with the support of district staff. We offer individual support to families; providing help selecting curriculum, obtaining materials, formulating personal education plans, developing learning activities, and providing access to modern technology tools with personalized training and assessment.

Q: Will the district help purchase educational materials for my child?

A: Yes, the Home Education Exchange provides a per student curriculum fund of up to $600 for students in grades 1-12 and up to $400 for Kindergarten students to support the Student Learning Plan (SLP). The allocation is intended to provide necessary curriculum material, equipment, supplies, and services required to achieve the student's learning goals.

Expenditures must be addressed in the student's learning plan, and signed by the SLP Consultant. The curriculum fund is available in one third allotments and can be used for each trimester the student attends the Home Education Exchange. Unused trimester allocations may accumulate to the next trimester. If a student does not use all of the allotted funds by the end of the school year the remaining amount will be used for site resources as determined by the needs of the members.

Q: May I keep the materials I purchase with my allocation?

Non consumable materials purchased with district money remain the property of Shoreline School District and will be added to the school's inventory for member use.

Q: What are my obligations?

A:The parents assume responsibility for the student's education and agree to document and provide instruction for a designated number of hours per week.

The parent will oversee and document the learning activities and the required hours spent to meet the above requirements.

The Student Learning Plan will be written and a monthly reveiew of progress will be conducted. Weekly personal contact with a staff member must be maintained via phone, email, or face to face.

Full time students participate in the District's annual testing program.

Q: Do you take part-time students?

A:Yes, we will enroll students on a part-time basis. However, part-time students do not recieve the full student curriculum funds or have access to all the member benefits. Required hours are adjusted based on the enrollment status of the student. Part-time home schooled students must also keep their intent to homeschool form current.

Q: What kind of records am I required to keep?

A: The parent, child and staff member complete a written Student Learning Plan (SLP) establishing the educational goals, objectives and evaluation criteria for the year. The parent will participate in the monthly on-line review of progress and monitor the student's the average number of hours per week working on the student learning plan.

Q: Do you offer classes?

A: Yes, there are some courses and activities based on the interests and needs of the members. Classes, workshops and special activities are also initiated by parents and staff, along with field trips, special speakers and on-site technology training.

There is also a growing number of on-line curricula and distance learning opportunities available to members.

For a complete and up to date listing, see the Classes and Workshops schedule on our WINGS web site, or request a hard copy of the class lists.

Q: Am I required to attend classes with my child?

A: Students on-site must be supervised by the student's parent, guardian or other designated adult member. It is not required, but highly encouraged that parents attend the activities and classes with their children to support attainment of the educational objectives.

Q: Is there a maximum amount of time a student can be at HEE?

A: No, but, it is understood that a parent, guardian or other designated adult member will be on site with the student and the student is pursuing an educational goal that is included in the PEP.

Q: How long do the classes run?

A: Typically a class will run for one trimester (11-12 weeks) and usually one lesson per week. There are some classes offered for one half trimester (6 weeks). Occasionally we offer a one time class, field trip or event.

Q: How much does a class cost?

A: Most classes cost $3.00 per session deducted from the student's curriculum fund. A few classes are more and may require an extra materials or lab fee.

Q: Do you provide care for preschool siblings?

A: No, but we have rooms where parents may take turns watching the younger ones while the other parents and children attend classes or work on their educational goals.

Q: Do you follow the Shoreline School District calendar?

A: Yes, we close on all official holidays and some staff work days.
