In Kellogg sports news… The results are in. The cross-country district championships were held at the Shoreline Stadium yesterday against several tough competitors. Even though the course was long and grueling and there was a cold east wind blowing your Knights were ready for the challenge.

First up: the 7th grade girls.  Gigi Vuyovich, and Elise Froebe made the two/three punch that knocked the other teams out of contention. Rebecca Walton, Bailey Nygeen, and Elisa Adams added strong finishes that won Kellogg’s position of…the 7th Grade Girls District Championship Team 1st place. Yes, I repeat, 1st place at District Championships. Awesome Job!

Next up: the 7th grade boys. No one could catch Ryan Hefferman! Some commented that it seemed his feet weren’t even touching the ground. Ryan beat the pack and took an individual first place. Kelly McCafferry, Aaron Zevenbergen, Zac Bouffiou, and Davin, Hoover also had great races, which allowed the boys to take the 7th Grade boys District Championship team 2nd place.

And now…8th Grade Girls. Kate (pure determination) Hildahl, Allison Pincus, Frida (I follow the cookie on Kate’s head) Swensen, Rose Marie Haynes, and Zoe Shaw combined their awesome individual scores to come away with a team effort that got them…drum roll please…the 8th Girls District Championship Team First Place! Again, Excellent Effort!

Last but definitely not least. Well, actually there are only four of them so maybe that does apply. The 8th Grade boys ran strong individual times but they couldn’t compete as a team since they didn’t have enough team runners. Mark Officer placed 5th overall. Joe Loiseau, Wylie Mao, and Erik Skamser also finished high in the pack. Great effort boys! Go Knights!

Remember Kellogg: Nathaniel Braden said, “The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.” and have an AWARE day.

Today is Thursday, October 8, 2009.
It is a “2-Day.”

The first GSA meeting of the year will be today after school during Hang Time. Any student who has turned in a Hang Time permission slip is welcome to attend.

In Kellogg sports news: Your Kellogg Knights played their second home game of the season yesterday and came away with their 1st win of the season. The first half was a defensive struggle with Ethan Jensen scoring the only Kellogg touchdown with a strip of the ball carrier and a 35-yard rumble to the end zone. Brier Terrace tied it up on a long pass and the teams went into halftime tied at 6. At halftime the Kellogg coaching staff gave a fiery speech, so tears might have been shed, but it was time for the O-Line to MAN-UP. And MAN-UP they did. In the second half the O-LINE DOMINATED. Led by TJ, Nate, Nick, Woldgang, Brandon, Kyle, James and Derek they opened holes a bus could have ran threw. Will scored on a 40-yard reverse to put the Knights up 12-6. Another long touchdown pass from Brier Terrace tied the score at 12. Kellogg got the ball back with 6 minutes to play and put together a game winning drive. Spencer and Ethan combined to move the Knights down the field with Spencer scoring the game-winning touchdown from 2 yards out. Jonathan added the 2-point conversion on the kick after, to put the Knights up 20-12. Brier Terrace had one last chance but Ethan closed the game with an interception to seal the 20-12 win. Congratulations Knights on your 1st win of the season. REMEMBER NO PRACTICE TODAY!

It wasn’t only the football team that had a successful evening… the Kellogg softball team put up a big win last night against Voyager. Ace pitching by Callie Anderson and Jeralyn Pasoquen kept the other team to two runs. Alissa Kaufhold ended the game with a bang, knocking one deep to left field and getting a grand slam. The Knights were victorious 19-2.

Remember Kellogg: Mahatma Gandhi said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” and have a HARMONIOUS day.

The Kellogg boys team took 2nd place behind Harbour Pointe. Kelly McCaffery ran an especially strong race, finishing 1st on his team. Davin Hoover and Erik Skamser fought off their competition in a race to the finish line, despite having a major energy leak along the way. Emilio Garcia showed great improvement this week-- keep up the good work!

The coaches awards will go to Rebecca Walton for a lightning-fast finish, Paul Heffner for his exceptional work ethic during practice and Brianna Garlock for being so tough and for having such a positive attitude, despite all of her injuries! The coaches would like to thank the cross-country team for a great bus ride home, their team spirit and sportsmanship towards their own team and other teams. GO KNIGHTS!

As part of the Shoreline District Flu Plan we are sharing this information with you so that we all will be aware of ways that we can try to avoid catching and spreading the both the regular seasonal flu and the H1N1 virusThe nurse is available to answer additional questions that you may have.

  1. The H1N1 flu virus is expected to appear in our classrooms and school buildings soon after we all return to school in September. The peak of the outbreak could come as soon as October and there are many ways we can attempt to limit the spread. Since schools and especially school children are primary in the spread of both types of flu we need everyone from youngest students to our graduating seniors and all staff to limit the spread of the flu in every way we know how.
  1. Here are the things we expect you and your families to be doing so that everyone can stay healthy:
  • It is VITALLY important for everyone to stay home if you are sick with a fever of 100 or more, feel hot, feel chilled, have a sore throat, a cough, or are miserable with body aches or headaches. These are signs that you might have the flu. Even if you have a test, a presentation or an important assignment, we expect everyone, teachers, staff and students to STAY HOME, if you have any signs of illness. Then STAY HOME until you are not sick any more and your fever has been gone for one whole 24 hr day without fever reducing medications. (For your younger students we will be communicating this directly to parents.)
  • If you begin to feel sick during the school day, tell your teacher right away, and go to the nurse to get checked out.  Do not try to ‘tough it out’ till the end of the day as we might have encouraged you to do in the past. Generally with flu symptoms you will begin feeling really sick in a short period of time.
  • Washing your hands often and scrubbing them well is now the most important way to keep from getting sick. Your teachers may remind you and you can remind your classmates. EVERYONE should be washing much more often than you have in the past. Using an alcohol gel, like Purell is Ok, but hot water and soap is better.
  • If you sneeze or cough, be sure to use your elbow to catch the sneeze. If you do sneeze or cough into your hands, go wash them very well immediately. If you sneeze and use a Kleenex, throw the Kleenex in the trash and wash your hands immediately.
    • Do not share your lunches or snacks, drinks, water bottles, lip balm, & lipsticks. Also sharing other items like pencils, pens, and other school supplies are discouraged. Sharing these things are other ways flu viruses can spread, so don’t share any food, drinks or cosmetics.

Remember Kellogg: Eleanor Roosevelt said, “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” and have a COURAGEOUS day.

It is a great source of information about Kellogg activities and community events!

Ms. Hurtado, 8th grade counselor, and Ms. Forry, 7th grade counselor, want you to know that all requests for schedule changes must be turned in by next Wednesday, September 9. If you need a schedule change see your counselor or leave them a Request For Conference Slip before school, after school or at lunch. The purple Request For Conference Slips are available outside the counselors offices.

Fall sports, 8th grade football, cross country, and girls’ softball, begin next week on Tuesday, September 8th. Athletes are still needed for all teams. If you have not turned in an updated athletics packet for this year, pick one up from the main office and turn it in as soon as possible. Athletes that have not turned in a complete athletics packet and paid the ASB and athletic fee will not be allowed to participate.

Tomorrow, Thursday, is PICTURE DAY be sure to bring your picture packet and payment to school if you wish to purchase pictures. All students will have their picture taken for their ID cards!

Remember Kellogg: “May today mark the beginning of many new joys and accomplishments…and a continuation of all the good things that you have already achieved.” and have a GREAT afternoon.
