Anna Anderson

Hey Kellogg Knights,

I would like to introduce myself as the Drug and Alcohol Counselor, and
would like to tell you about myself and the referral process. Referring
students will be similar to how it is has been done in the past.

This is my first year at Kellogg and I am excited to be here as a support to
students, staff, and families! I am passionate about motivating students
into making wise choices for themselves, as well as educating them on the
consequences of bad choices. Before this, I worked as a school counselor in
the Mercer Island School District. I have my Masters in Education: School
Counseling from Seattle Pacific University.

As the Drug and Alcohol Counselor, I do staff education/training, facilitate
student support groups, classroom presentations, 1:1 counseling, participate
in student interventions, and do parent education. I will be at Kellogg on
Wednesdays and Thursdays. In addition to seeing students, I would love to
visit your classrooms?

If you have concerns about a student being under the influences of drugs or
alcohol in class, please call an administrator to escort the student to the
nurse’s office and she will determine if the student is under the influence.
You are encouraged to be discreet as possible and to minimize confrontation
in the classroom. An administrator will determine the next steps.

Possible signs and symptoms of intoxication/impairment:
-Bloodshot, glazed, or “sleepy” eyes
-Keeping head down/hiding face
-Having trouble walking/balancing
-Sleeping in class
-Smelling like alcohol/marijuana

When you are concerned that a student’s behavior may be due to use, be
discreet. There are many reasons that a child may display the above symptoms
and may not be caused by drugs or alcohol. Please refer a student even if
you have a feeling that something might be “off.” We want students at
Kellogg to get the message that adults are concerned. ?

General Concern for Student
If you have concerns about a student’s use, or that his/her family members
or friends use, please let me know. You can email, call, leave a note in my
box, or talk to me in person about your concerns. Please do not use student
names in the title of any email.

Possible Guidelines for Referrals
-Display drug related items, such as clothing, drawings, writing the name of
a drug or reference to a drug (i.e.: 420). Drug related clothing is
prohibited here at Kellogg.
-Talking about “partying” or drugs.
-Sleeping, appearing tired or saying he/she is tired, and being unprepared
or unkept could all be signs of use, or that the student needs additional
support.

Please contact me if you have any concerns. I am excited to be at Kellogg!

Smiles,

Anna Anderson, M. Ed.
