Second and Third Grade at LFP

Second and Third Grade students at Lake Forest Park Elementary School work toward improving their reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension skills. The students move from learning to read to reading to learn as curriculum becomes integrated. Students begin to develop a unique voice, while participating in expanding their knowledge of procedure writing, narrative expression, report writing, and recount.

Second Graders' mathematical focus is on developing a strong foundation utilizing a wide variety of strategies for addition and subtraction computation, number sense, and problem solving. These addition and subtraction strategies are further solidified as Third Graders broaden their knowledge of number sense through immersion in multiplication facts. In addition, students at both grade levels begin to articulate their mathematical understanding and show their work through words, diagrams, and pictures.

Second Grade students engage in "hands on" Science and Social Studies activities through the study of Balance and Motion, Air and Weather, Insects, Communities, Health, and Safety.

Third Grade Science and Social Studies curriculum focuses on rocks and minerals, the structure of plant and animal life, physics of sound, measurement, Seattle, Health, and Safety.
