This is an exciting year for students at LFP. Students are challenged with both content and process as they learn and study in a variety of ways in our classrooms, integrating thinking skills and behaviors, and the arts.

Reading, writing, and oral communication skill-building take place across the curriculum. Six Traits writing tools and oral communication skills are used to share learning in all areas. Reading focuses on learning about the world around us. Students study United States history through the Revolutionary War, world geography through Daily Geography®, and citizenship through our class meeting and Student Council

structures. FOSS science Landforms, Variables, and Earth, Moon, Sun kits are explored to experience the scientific process. The Great Body Shop® health program teaches students about good nutrition and exercise habits, how bodies change, first aid basics, and good decision-making.

The Everyday Learning® mathematics program challenges students to apply problem-solving strategies, use arithmetic knowledge and skills, and develop mathematical ways of thinking about the world around us.

Fifth grade also brings students their first opportunities to

participate in both instrumental music and the annual Drama Club production. Students' rich physical education and vocal music experiences contribute to their successes in both activities as LFP's PE and Music teachers have worked to develop fine and gross motor skills and musical theory throughout the K-4 programs.

Finally, learning ultimately focuses on helping students develop

self-assessment and goal-setting skills. Students may participate in fall conferences and are continually involved in evaluating work and behaviors against accepted standards. Many opportunities are provided for students to grow and improve with encouragement and support provided for each student as needed.
