Math & Science

Our sixth graders use a new district program adpted thius year, Connected Mathematics, as a framework. Each unit we cover includes many extra activities to engage students in high-level mathematical thinking, including over 30 additional projects for our students. In solid geometry we will, for example, cost out reconstructing the Great Pyramid, and divide into groups working as the package designing division of a company creating different boxes based on specified surface area, volume, or perimeter. When we study ratios we will use mountain bikes and identify gear ratios, relating them to speed and distance covered by each crank rotation. Challenging self-paced problems are given following a WASL format, with an evaluation rubric. My goal is to provide students with the ability to apply critical mathematical reasoning to applied situations with confidence.

Our science curriculum this year centers on structural failure , creating and testing trusses; and using the principles of simple machines, including accurately drawing and labeling simple machines, developing plans for a machine to perform a labor-saving function, and developing marketing plans for it.

Each student will participate in a class Science Investigation, creating a project using the scientific method. Projects will be evaluated with an extensive rubric.
