In our reading this year we will work at understanding how an author writes effectively. Your child will be learning to interact with and critically think about what he or she reads, to become a more effective reader who uses books as a learning vehicle to improve writing. Reading is tied closely to writing, and the two are mutually interactive and supportive.

As the year progresses and we analyze literature this task becomes easier, and your child will be increasingly able to reflect on what he or she has read and quickly transmit his or thoughts in writing. On some days I will read a chapter or two from books by outstanding children's authors. After reading we analyze together the mechanics of effective writing, including use of plot, character traits, and settings. Your child will also regularly participate in Literature Circles. These sessions provide experience in summarizing, responding clearly to questions, and discussing writing critically. I have created detailed instructions and rubrics for these sessions.

Your child will also use Internet resources, reading extensively and taking notes, to write detailed plan for a trip around Washington state. This will be assembled in a word document.
