Panther Tracks – May

Dear Parkwood Parents & Students:

Hopefully the April showers have gone away and the spring flowers are here to stay.  Here’s hoping that you and your children enjoyed our spring break and your time in the beautiful sunshine last week.  We are excited to be back for our last 8 weeks of the school year and likely the busiest time of the year.  Please be sure to print off the Parkwood Activity Calendars on the back two pages to stay up-to-date with all of the special events going on.

Since we were on vacation during the official “Office Professional’s Day,” we celebrated and honored our hard-working and dedicated office staff, Lisa Donnell, Rose Ann McLaughlin on Wednesday, May 1s.  Classes made nice posters/cards for our office staff and gave them special flowers for May Day.  School Nurse’s Day is next week and we will celebrate on May 9th.  Please encourage your child to write nice card or note for Ms. Condit, our nurse.

Now that we have returned to school we will be hard at work to take the state’s Measure of Student Progress (MSP) for all 3rd-6th graders.  The testing scheduled for each grade level is listed on the school calendar on the back two pages.  It is VERY important to avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing dates as we need them in school on time each day.  In addition, parents who are regularly scheduled to volunteer on one of the testing dates are asked to reschedule as we have strict guidelines of who can and cannot be present during testing.  Parkwood believes that every child is capable of meeting the standards on the MSP and by working hard together we will achieve that!  Please encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep the night before his/her tests and to eat a healthy breakfast.

Have a Merry Month of May!

Mr. Poage, Principal

Parkwood Fields Project – Coming Soon!

PWFieldsStarting soon after the last day of school, June 21st, construction crews will begin digging into the Parkwood Playground to install the new (accessible) Parkwood Soccer Field.  This project was approved by voters in School Bond of 2006 and as a result the Parkwood Play Field will be closed for 1 year.  When it reopens in Sept. 2014, our students and neighborhood community will have a beautiful new play/soccer field.  Until then, we will have to compromise in our play areas and be patient for the grass to grow.

Eight District schools to receive Washington Achievement Awards

Eight Shoreline schools are receiving Washington Achievement Awards for 2012. The Washington Achievement Awards, now in their fourth year, are sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. Award winners are selected using the state’s Achievement Index and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver.

“We’re thrilled that the Achievement Awards have come to mean so much to schools and districts across the state,” said State Board of Education Chair Jeff Vincent.  “It’s important to us at the state level to ensure that our work benefits everyone, and the award and index do exactly that.”

Shoreline Schools are being recognized for being top performers in these categories:

  • Overall Excellence: Lake Forest Park and Shorewood
  • Science: Brookside, Highland Terrace, Lake Forest Park and Parkwood
  • Closing Achievement Gaps: Briarcrest, Highland Terrace, Parkwood and Shorecrest.
  • High Progress (Title I eligible or participating schools only): Ridgecrest.

This year the Washington Achievement Awards have been combined with the awards and accountability criteria in the ESEA Flexibility Waiver. The “High Progress” category replaces the “Improvement” category from previous years.

State Superintendent Randy Dorn praised this new collaboration. “Schools and communities expect state and federal governments to work together on accountability,” he said. “We’re grateful that the Flexibility Waiver has given us a chance to align our accountability efforts with the federal government’s expectations. This will streamline both systems over time and provide a better picture of how our schools are doing.”

The award-winning schools will be honored during an award ceremony on April 30 at Kentwood High School in Covington.

Washington’s School Achievement Index rates all schools according to specific outcomes and indicators from 2010 to 2012. The five outcomes are student performance in statewide assessments in reading, writing, math and science tests, as well as the school’s extended graduation rate, which includes those students who took longer than four years to graduate.

Those outcomes are each measured using four indicators:

  1. achievement of students who are not from low-income families;
  2. achievement of students who are from low-income families;
  3. achievement of a school when compared to “peers” (schools with similar student characteristics, such as the percentage of students who have a disability, are learning English, are designated as gifted, come from low-income families, and are mobile); and
  4. improvement in the achievement of all students combined from the previous year.

The average of the resulting 20 measures comprises the overall index.
