June Panther Tracks Newsletter

PANTHER TRACKS JUNE2013-3

Dear Parkwood Families,

This is our final Panther Tracks Newsletter of the school year, believe it or not, and it is filled with important end-of-the-year information.  Please be sure to save the last pages calendar so you can keep up with all of the events going on.

As Superintendent Walker told you last week via district e-mail, I am sad to say that my stay at Parkwood Elementary School will be shorter than I had hoped.  I have decided to leave Parkwood Elementary School after this school year and pursue other interests in arts education leadership and curriculum, instruction and staff development.  I have had a good year this year and will miss all the wonderful students, families and staff I’ve befriended and gotten to work with.  This really is a special place for learning and the support I’ve had from the PTA leadership, the new WATCH D.O.G.S. Program, the International Committee, FAN, and the wonderful programs offered here at school have been very rewarding and enriching.  Hopefully, I’ll still be in the local area and will get to drop in and say hello once in a while, but until then, I wish you well.

The Shoreline School District has begun the process of selecting a new principal for Parkwood starting the 2013-14 school year and I’m sure they will try to make an announcement as soon as they can.  Again, thank you for sharing your child, family, and school year with me. I hope you all have a wonderful last month of school and enjoy a safe and relaxing summer!  Mr. Poage, Principal

May Panther Tracks Newsletter

Panther Tracks – May

Dear Parkwood Parents & Students:

Hopefully the April showers have gone away and the spring flowers are here to stay.  Here’s hoping that you and your children enjoyed our spring break and your time in the beautiful sunshine last week.  We are excited to be back for our last 8 weeks of the school year and likely the busiest time of the year.  Please be sure to print off the Parkwood Activity Calendars on the back two pages to stay up-to-date with all of the special events going on.

Since we were on vacation during the official “Office Professional’s Day,” we celebrated and honored our hard-working and dedicated office staff, Lisa Donnell, Rose Ann McLaughlin on Wednesday, May 1s.  Classes made nice posters/cards for our office staff and gave them special flowers for May Day.  School Nurse’s Day is next week and we will celebrate on May 9th.  Please encourage your child to write nice card or note for Ms. Condit, our nurse.

Now that we have returned to school we will be hard at work to take the state’s Measure of Student Progress (MSP) for all 3rd-6th graders.  The testing scheduled for each grade level is listed on the school calendar on the back two pages.  It is VERY important to avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing dates as we need them in school on time each day.  In addition, parents who are regularly scheduled to volunteer on one of the testing dates are asked to reschedule as we have strict guidelines of who can and cannot be present during testing.  Parkwood believes that every child is capable of meeting the standards on the MSP and by working hard together we will achieve that!  Please encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep the night before his/her tests and to eat a healthy breakfast.

Have a Merry Month of May!

Mr. Poage, Principal

Parkwood Fields Project – Coming Soon!

PWFieldsStarting soon after the last day of school, June 21st, construction crews will begin digging into the Parkwood Playground to install the new (accessible) Parkwood Soccer Field.  This project was approved by voters in School Bond of 2006 and as a result the Parkwood Play Field will be closed for 1 year.  When it reopens in Sept. 2014, our students and neighborhood community will have a beautiful new play/soccer field.  Until then, we will have to compromise in our play areas and be patient for the grass to grow.
