WHAT QUALIFIES

Volunteer service qualifies for Shorecrest hours when no pay is received and…

It is performed for a nonprofit organization

It is completed outside of class

It is not required for class grade or for the courts

It benefits a community or its institutions

With pre-approval, it’s for an individual or group in need with a demonstrated financial hardship

Examples of Approved Sites:

Schools, hospitals, retirement homes, youth sports teams, service organizations (Rotary, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire, etc.), YMCA, Center for Human Services, food banks, environmental projects, fundraising for community agencies, Pacific Science Center, Seattle Aquarium. The following will not be accepted as community service:
Gardening for someone who is too busy to do it (there is no demonstration of financial hardship)

Helping at a business (for-profit businesses should pay, not exploit, student labor)

Babysitting or cleaning house for a parent, friend or neighbor (is considered a family obligation, or a neighborly act — not community service)
Fundraising for a Shorecrest class or a Shorecrest club (unless it’s a community service club or community related fundraiser)
Religious proselytizing, reading Bible verses, teaching Sunday School, being an acolyte
(however service that relates to support of a church will be accepted – such as preparing or serving food for a dinner, cleaning the sanctuary pews, gardening, non-paid nursery duty)
Tutoring for math honors (required for class grade)
Limitations
Hours earned during the freshman year and the summer before the sophomore year do not apply toward Shorecrest’s 60-hour requirement. This is because Community Service is integrated into the English 10 curriculum. Once the 60-hour requirement has been fulfilled the student’s freshman hours will be added to the 60 hours.
Shorecrest drama productions have a 15 hour limit per production toward Shorecrest’s 60-hour requirement. This is to encourage community service outside of Shorecrest. Once the 60-hour requirement has been fulfilled the student’s extra drama production hours will be added to the 60 hours.
Only community related senior projects qualify for community service hours and a maximum of 10 hours can be counted.
Pre-approval is required when service will be for…
An individual
A family
A for-profit business
Assisting Senior Projects (must be community related)
