Dancers:
By
spring of 1962, a lot had already been done to establish
Shorecrest's Scottish theme and traditions. However,
there was still talk of dissatisfaction among students.
So much had been done to enhance Shorecrest's Scottish
theme, but students began asking why no one had thought
of having a Scottish dance group.
Shorecrest
staff were fond of the idea. Unfortunately, the school
had no way to pay for the activity. Students persisted
towards the idea, so and appointment with principal
Mr. Holand was made in order for the girls to present
their idea to him. He agreed to go through with the
creation of the group and so Shorecrest's very own "Highland
Lassies" were born.
There
was still the issue of getting the money to pay for
uniforms. Since the school did not have the budget for
it, the girls decided to create their own. By fall of
1963 the dancers had been created and were performance
ready.
When
the group started, girls would not be selected until
Sophomore year, and would become Lassies on their Junior
year. Each year when Senior dancers graduated, they
would then pass their uniforms down to the new Junior
dancers.
Today,
Lassies are selected Freshman year and can then become
dancers Sophomore year. Just as it was practiced 40
years ago, graduating dancers still pass down their
uniforms to new Lassies. Shorecrest's Highland Lassies
continue to carry the school's Scottish traditions on
to this day.
