Introduction:
Shorecrest
Highschool is a very unique high school, known mostly
for its Scottish theme. The school fields a fully-kilted
marching band, its own pipe band, and its own group
of highland dancers. Shorecrest’s history, however,
is unknown by many. How did the school come to get its
Scottish theme?
Shorecrest
Highschool opened in September of 1961. The school got
its name as a result of an essay contest, won by Kathy
Young, who stated that since the school boundaries included
the shores of Lake Washington and that the school was
on the crest of a hill, it should be named Shorecrest.
Once the school had opened, the first task was deciding
on school colors. After much consideration and voting,
3 colors were decided on: Forest Green, Old Gold, and
Navy Blue. This was a bit of a problem, but it was finally
suggested that the colors could be used in a plaid,
and the school might want to consider being Scots. This
idea was further enhanced by the fact that the school’s
football field was on “high land” and the
school could be the Shorecrest Highlanders.
