Science Competitions
The Science Club has the opportunity to participate in a number of different competitions. If you are a club member and are interested in competing, please talk to one of the club officers.
Those competitions marked with an asterisk (*) are more individual-based, and are not club competitions.
Science Olympiad - As one of the most popular science competitions in the region, the Science Olympiad has been the main competition for the Shorecrest Science Club in the past. To participate, a group of at least 12 students is necessary; commitment and preparation is necessary because competition is tough. People may compete in small groups or as individuals. Categories range from biology, chemistry, physics, and more. The competition consists of smaller contests, which may be in test, lab, or demonstration form. Points earned for each smaller contest go toward the school total; ribbons may be won by individuals or small groups for each contest, and awards go to the schools with the largest number of total points. Visit the Washington State Science Olympiad Website for more information.
*The Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science & Technology - Sponsored by the College Board, this is a competition in which students create a science research report, either individually or in groups of two or three. Those projects that pass an initial blind judging go on to compete at the regional level, with oral and poster presentations. Winners compete at the national level. Scholarship prizes are available for regional/national winners. Visit the Siemens Foundation Home Page to learn more.
National Oceans Science Bowl: Orca Bowl - The Washington State Science Bowl is the Orca Bowl, hosted by the University of Washington. Teams consist of five high school students (four participants, one alternate) and their coach, who must answer rapid-fire and problem-solving questions relating to oceans science. Coaches will receive materials for preparation and study. Visit the regional site for the Orca Bowl or the National Ocean Sciences Bowl site.
Washington Science Teachers Association's Annual Science and Engineering Contest - This competition is similar to the Science Olympiad in design, as smaller contests make up the competition as a whole, but the competition itself is not as high-stakes as Science Olympiad. Visit the Science and Engineering Contest website for further information.
