Shorewood High School
Student Laptop Use
We are looking forward to another exciting year with laptop technology as a key ingredient to the learning environment at Shorewood.
Welcome Back! We hope that you’ve had a wonderful summer, and are ready to once again start learning with laptops.
Adjustments to image settings have to be performed by Tech Staff, so parents will need to submit a formal request specifying any changes they desire. Parents are not able to manage the settings themselves.
Shorewood Laptop Requirements
Courses at Shorewood use various technology to enhance teaching and learning. Her are guidelines regarding the use of technology at Shorewood:
1. Students may choose to check out a laptop for the school year or use loaners during the school day. Students who "opt out" of a 24/7 must complete the opt out form, signed by parents, to be issued a loaner ID. The student will use the ID to easily check out laptops for a single class or a portion of the day. between classes, before and after school computer access is also available in the school library. Students who elect to "opt-out" of 24/7 laptop should strongly consider purchase of a thumb drive with 1-2GB of memory.
Download the Student Laptop "Opt-Out" form for parent signature here.
2. All students need to be ready to use their laptops (fully charged) every day, and also willingly stay on task, using the computers as teachers direct them to be used. Students should keep the laptop in the case and out of sight until teachers make it clear that the laptop is part of the lesson for the day. Teachers will make it clear to students that their attention is required by asking them to take their hands off their keyboards, or place their lids down. Students must follow these directions promptly when teachers are seeking attention.
3. Students using their computer for other purposes will be asked to stop, and with repeated problems, may lose laptop privileges for a period of time in a single class or be referred to an administrator. No headphones are allowed unless specified by teachers for a particular assignment.
4. Other electronics such as cell phones, ipod/mp3 players should be off and out of sight or they may be confiscated in class.
5. All students can benefit from the use of an email account to communicate with peers and teachers. Students who do not have internet access at home may access the internet from school (before, star, lunch, after), the King County Library, or other free WI-FI areas.
6. Please use the Shoreline School District naming convention to name all files:
class period_last name and first initial_assignment title
Example for Jane Doe: 2_doej_amstudsyllabus
7. When you need to find a teachers box on the server, please do the following:
a) from the desktop, find “Go”, then scroll to “connect to server”
b) register as a student or guest, depending
c) hit staff, then go to the letter of the alphabet and find the teacher’s name
d) click and open the folder folder. If you are turning in an assignment, open my “classes” folder, and drag your assignment into the correct class period (having named your assignment using the naming convention above). If you are downloading an assignment, then open my public folder and find the appropriate assignment- drag it to your desktop before opening it. Then you have the assignment/document even if you do not have access to the server or the internet.
e) I repeat, ALWAYS drag documents from the server to your own desktop before opening them.
8. ALWAYS back up your work and keep a copy… to the student server…CD…thumb drive, etc.
